Can You Jumpstart a Car With a Golf Cart?

Jump starting a car is the process of starting it again because it got depleted or discharged with the aid of a temporary connection made to the battery of a different car or any other external power source such as a golf cart.

You may be wondering if you can jumpstart your car with a golf cart, yes, you can. It works. So, if the battery of your car is dead, you can jumpstart it with your golf cart batteries. Although golf cart batteries don’t discharge very fast, you may need to wait for quite a long time before you can jump-start your car after connecting it to the golf cart batteries.

As soon as the electricity from the golf cart battery recharges your dead car’s battery, it gives it the power required to crank its engine. When your car starts, its regular charging system is recharged so that the temporary source of power can be eliminated. As long as your car’s charging system is working well, if you leave its engine running, it will help to replenish its battery charge but you should drive your car for some minutes after you begin to speed up the recharging procedure.

Jumper cables are the name of the equipment that is used to connect the batteries of your car to the golf cart batteries. It is always good you carry jumper cables in your car and other devices that could come in handy if the battery of your car dies. Most times, your car manual contains the processes involved in connecting and disconnecting jumper cables.

A golf cart is a tiny vehicle that is powered by either a tiny gasoline engine or an electric motor. It is used for conveying two more golfers to a golf course. So, this golf cart prevents golfers from walking to the golf course. All golf carts that are powered by electric motors run between thirty-six to forty volts and draw between fifty to seventy amps of current while moving at about fifteen miles per hour. If you don’t want to be disappointed by your golf cart, you must allow them to supply you with a constant flow of high currents for a long time. Also, you should know that all golf cart batteries usually experience discharge cycles and full charge every day. If you drain your golf cart batteries below fifty percent, it would gradually reduce its performance and life span. Although golf cart batteries are made with extra durability to maintain prolonged current draw constant discharging. Golf cart batteries often come in six, eight, and twelve-volt configurations that can easily be wired in sequence to offer the needed voltage. For instance, six-volt batteries can be connected in a sequence to offer thirty-six volts, or four twelve-volt batteries can offer forty-eight volts.

So, you can easily use a golf cart battery to jumpstart your car without having to bother about draining a lot of the golf cart battery because a regular car’s battery has twelve volts. You can also use a normal car’s battery to power a golf cart. All you need to do is connect about three or four twelve volts car batteries in a series to offer the needed thirty-six or forty-eight volts to the golf cart motor. But you should know that your car’s batteries are designed in such a way that it offers a large surge of current for short times. Usually, golf carts often come with their unique chargers but you can use your car’s charger to charge it.

How to jumpstart a car with a golf cart

If your car’s battery dies, you can use jumper cables to jump-start it with golf cart batteries. If you know how to use jumper cables on your car, ensure that the battery on your golf cart has as much voltage as your car. If you can correctly hook up the jumper cables, it doesn’t matter if your car has negative ground while your golf cart has positive ground.

To easily jump start your car, follow these procedures:

1. Bring out your jumper cables

Like we earlier mentioned, if you are a car owner, ensure you purchase a set of jumper cables and always make sure they are kept in the trunk compartment of your car. But if you don’t have your jumper cables with you and you need to quickly jumpstart your cat, you can ask another car owner to help you with his or her own.

2. Position your car and golf cart in either neutral or park, then shut off their ignition

After doing all that, engage the parking brakes of the golf cart and your car.

3. Fix one of the red clips to the positive terminal of your car’s battery

The positive terminal either has “+” or “POS” on it and it is a bit bigger than the negative terminal.

4. Join the other red clip to the positive terminal of the golf cart.

5. Attach one of the black clips to the negative terminal on the other battery.

6. Attach the other black clip to an unpainted metal surface on your vehicle that is not close to the battery.

7. Start your functioning car and allow the engine to run for some minutes.

8. Attempt starting your car.

If your car still refuses to start, check to see if the jumper cables are correctly connected and tell someone to help you run the engine of the golf cart for some minutes.

Then, attempt to start your car again. If you are still unable to start it, it could be that your battery is faulty.

But if you can jump-start your car, avoid shutting off your car’s engine immediately. Instead, drive around for say fifteen minutes so your car’s battery can be recharged. If your car refuses to start the next time you try using it, it means your car’s battery has issues with holding a charge and you need to replace the battery.

Conclusion

You can jumpstart your car with a golf cart. It is possible. All you need to do is use a jumper cable and follow the procedures outlined in the article to get it done. But golf cart batteries don’t discharge easily so you will need to be patient for a while before you attempt jumpstarting your car.
